MELanie KATSALIDIS PACKAGING
Contemporary fine jeweller Melanie Katsalidis established Pieces of Eight in 2005. Alongside a space of curated conceptual and wearable pieces, from both emerging and established jewellery designers. In 2022, Melanie designed a dedicated space in the Melbourne’s Royal Arcade for her self named jewellery brand.
Working closely with M. Geisser who created the visual identity for Melanie Katsalidis and Pieces of Eight, we were engaged to design the jewellery and store packaging collateral.
Drawing on inspiration from soft materials, architectural elements and colour families which are an amalgamation of the Russell Place and Royal Arcade locations.
A collaboration that spanned over four years, as the new space evolved, we developed a ring box, universal box, and a shopper bag.
The shopper bag features a circular cut-out which pays homage to the window from the Pieces of Eight space on Russell Place.
The bag is constructed from 250gsm art paper, reinforced with a 350gsm card around the circular handles.
The contrasting packaging colour of the shopper bag and jewellery boxes were inspired by fabric swatches from Melanie Katsalidis new boutique interior, designed by Foolscap.
The sturdy ring box creates two fold like lid designed with a structured internal box made from a thick box board and a flocked insert to house the ring.
The front flap uses a curved corner for an effortless box opening, once opened, a circular cut-out on the second flap frames the jewels inside.
The boxes house hidden magnets to close the internal circle cutout to create a flush closure.
The Russell Place window element was applied to the design of the box to reveal the jewels when opened.
A universal box was designed to house larger pieces such as necklaces and earrings. This too, uses the same Russel Place window element to reveal the jewels inside.
